Rules for Correspondence

 

The Federal Bureau of Prisons has strict guidelines for corresponding with inmates including those on death row.

- Correspondence must be in English and the address must have the inmate's name and number on the envelope. The envelope must have a return name and address on it. All incoming and outgoing mail is subject to being read and/or photocopied by prison officials.

- Correspondence cannot contain postage stamps or stamped envelopes.

- Correspondence cannot contain Polaroid photographs.

- No books, magazines, or newspapers can be mailed to an inmate unless they are sent directly from a bookstore or a publisher.

- No items such as religious medals, crosses, leaves, hair, etc., can be sent to an inmate.

- No items such as CDs or cassette tapes can be sent to an inmate.

- Oversized envelopes must be labeled "Authorized by BOP Policy"
