LaRoyce L. Smith

Greetings,

I’m not quite sure how I should introduce myself, for I understand the value of fist impressions. But, I am in prison, moreso, I am on Texas Death Row, one has to be able to get beyond the stigma associated with this place before they can consider a man confined here.

My name is LaRoyce L. Smith, this is my 15th year behind these walls and iron bars. I was arrested at age 19 and convicted at the age of 20 so therefore, I came to prison as a child and since then I have grown into a man, an extraordinary man reared on solitude and prison knowledge, on pepper gas, on books, on tears, in many ways, I am still a child at heart. However, I have childish dreams like running free across cloudy skies or climbing a bean stalk right out of this place.

It is all in my way of rebelling these oppressive four white walls I’m confined to 23 hours a day. I guess, in a way, this request for a friend is a form of rebellion as well. Everything has been taken from me, even the basic interaction human beings usually share between one another.

Despite being deprived, I still have a desire for the confraternity of friendship. I yearn to “understand” and contribute to people’s life and to be “understood” equally in turn. Solitude has brought out the artist and poet in me, still my poetry goes un-read and my art work goes unseen, but most of all, I’m simply a man, an extra ordinary man, a human being.

I have the strength to sustain myself. I am fighting my conviction, and to preserve my sanity in this jungle. Nonetheless, my foremost intention is to offer my friendship.

In High Hope,

LaRoyce L. Smith
