Interview no.22 (2006-11-05)

 

Continueing to publish these Interviews with the men and women on death row we arrived with the 22nd interview. Julius Robinson volunteered to share his life, thoughts and dreams with our visitors and we're thankful for that. Interviews with the Condemned is very succesful and we hope to continue with these series as long as possible. That's only possible as long as the empty interview forms will continue to arrive on the death row units all across the USA. Below you'll find the interview with Julius Robinson who's housed on the federal death row unit in Terre Haute, Indiana for the last four years of his life.

1:

Question: Where were you born and raised?

Answer: I was born in Fayetteville, NC, but was raised in Dermott, AR, until I was about 14 yrs. Old. I moved to Arlington, TX ,after that until I came to jail.

Question: Will you share with us what it was like for you growing up? (Did you have a pet, a favorite game, hiding place, or favorite toy? Were you raised by both parents, a single parent or relative?)

Question: Do you have a favorite childhood memory? If so, what is it?

Answer: My dad Nad came to visit us and he had these flying bird that you could turn to make it fly. I thought this was the coolest thing in the world, because my brother and I were the only ones to have them in the whole town. My father also took us to the movie to see "Beat Street."

Question: Did you like school? If so, share with us your favorite memory from your school years.

Answer: School was fun because all of my homies were there and I loved to learn many things. My favorite teacher was in the first grade. Her name was Ms. Hammlant and she made learning fun. I will always remember her kindness to me even after I left Dermott.

Question: What person or event impacted you most as a child?

Question: What hobbies or activities did you participate in while growing up, e.g. scouting, sports, etc.

Answer: I was into all sports like football, baseball, basketball and track. Other then that I love to hunt, fish and shooting guns. You must understand that Dermott is a small country town.

Question: What was your first job? Please describe your duties/responsibilities and whether or not you liked the job.

Answer: My first job was at a Rally’s fast food restaurant and I worked the fries and had to take out the trash and clean up outside.

 

8:

Question: As a child or teenager, what did you want to do when you grew up? Why?

Answer: I wanted to play in the NFL like everyone else because I loved football so much and I was good at it and it paid good.

Question: Do you have a favorite movie or book? Please elaborate.

Question: Where was the most beautiful or special place that you can remember having visited? Please describe it.

Answer: The most beautiful place is Portland , OR . It was real clear and green everywhere. The air was fresh, and the rain was like mist. My special place is Las Vegas , because in 2000 I went there with my girlfriend, Jamila Camp, at the time. It was Valentine’s. We took a helicopter ride around Vegas at night and had so much fun together.

Question: What is the funniest thing that ever happened to you?

Answer: I almost got caught in this female bedroom by her drunken dad. That was so funny because I just knew he saw me in the closet.

Question: What job or occupation did you have prior to your incarceration? Were you employed at the time of your arrest?

Question: Were you involved with drugs or alcohol prior to your incarceration? If so, please share the effects this had on your life.

Question: What do you miss most about the outside world and why?

Answer: I miss not being able to go to see my family in Dermott. My grandmother is my heart and not able to see her smile is a crime in itself. Family is everything to me, without them I would be nothing.

Question: Do you have any strong spiritual or religious beliefs? If so do they influence how you view the future?

Answer: I have strong spiritual and religious beliefs. There are a lot of things that I do because of them. I try to respect everyone’s religions and love to sing.

Question: How important is it for you to have contact with your family, friends and/or the outside world? Please elaborate.

Answer: Like I said family is everything to me. They make you feel better even when you are down. Friends are a life line to the world, because sometimes your family is in the world but not in the world. Then you can tell your true friends from the fake.

Question: Do you remember your first thoughts when hearing the jury’s verdict of death as your sentence? Will you share this experience with us, e.g. your thoughts, feelings, reactions?

Question: What is a typical day like for you on death row?

Answer: I wake up for breakfast at about 5:30 or 6:00 every morning. On Monday, Wednesday and Friday’s when I have Rec. sometime I will get back up at about 7:30. At 10:00 we eat lunch, after lunch I work out then eat again at 3:30 or 4:00 for diner. I go to work at 5:00. I clean up on the range and the restroom for the officer and visit. I may cook something or just go back to my cell to watch TV. After watching TV I take a shower and be in bed by 1:00 am.

Question: Do you feel that capital punishment serves as a deterrent? Yes/No Please elaborate on your answer.

Question: If you could change one thing in the world today, what would it be and why?

Answer: The poverty – I think there is too much wealth in the world for all those woman and kids dying from no food, and AIDS.

Question: If you could go back in time, where and to what date would you travel and why?

Answer: I don’t know the day but it would have to be around 1984. I believe if we have caught the cancer early in my grandmother she would still be here, and I would not be here.

Question: What has been the most important and life-altering event you have experienced?

Question: What is the most important thing that you want our visitors to know about you?

Answer: That I’m going to fight these charges to the end, you will never hear me cry or bitch about small things, because there are people in the world that are much worse of then me. I will always keep Christ first in my life and if I don’t get off this death sentence I’m going to live my life to the fullest, until the end comes. Worrying will not bring back what you lost, so why worry?

Answer: As you know I’m on death row which is hard as it is. But with no income coming in but from my family it get’s even harder.
