Another hurdle cleared in $20 million police torture settlement

January 8, 2008

CHICAGO (AP) _ Chicago's City Council has approved a nearly $20 million settlement with former death-row inmates who claim they were tortured by police.

The settlement ends lawsuits brought by Stanley Howard, Aaron Patterson, Leroy Orange and Madison Hobley.

All have been exonerated in their death-penalty cases and claim Chicago police tortured them under the leadership of former Lieutenant Jon Burge.

Aldermen had been expected to approve the settlement last month, but paperwork problems postponed the vote until Wednesday.

City Law Department officials signed off on the final paperwork last week.
